The 24-ton urban rail car became a work of art. Meet Layup Gallery.

Monumental, post industrial hall in the old Gdansk Shipyard. A space of 600m2 and volume of over 10,000m3. 24-ton EN71 048 SKM train car placed in the middle. About 70 works by artists from the international graffiti scene.

Layup Gallery is an NGO with a clear mission: to present the most interesting phenomena related to graffiti and alternative urban art and to create a place for graffiti writers to meet, experiment and develop.

It all began in a small garage in 2015. At that time, it was one of the pioneering underground initiatives in this area. Nowadays, Layup Gallery, located in beautiful historic surroundings, has become a must-see for every urban explorer.

Currently on view is the “Outsiders” exhibition, which was first created in 2021. Since then, the monumental space of hall 94b is gradually being filled with works created by artists from all over the world, such as Moses&Taps (DE), Rage (DE), Sabe (DK), Rocco and his brothers (DE), Sebas Velasco (SE), Sainer (PL), Martí Sawe (ES), Karso (USA), Sicoer (PL), Honet (FR), Opium (IT), Riot 1394 (DE), Irene Fresh (ES), J.Demsky (ES), Form76 (DE), Mr.Paradox Paradise (DE).

Different styles, techniques, and mediums come together in one place, juxtaposing unwanted and invisible elements of urban space – graffiti, advertisements, and infrastructure.

Despite obvious differences, graffiti and advertising often use similar communication strategies (multiplication – the more, the better), both focus on visibility (the bigger, the better), use the same advertising medium (posters, stickers). Moreover, they also draw inspiration from the same sources, e.g.: pop culture, comics, art.

Ongoing densification of objects in the gallery space is part of a planned creative process that spans several years, and aims to illustrate different stages of an imagined City – from its Birth, through Growth and Stabilization to its Decline. This season (2024) we find ourselves in an interesting, long-awaited moment – Overload, in which the quantity of works creates a unique urban hyperreality that strongly affects the viewer’s senses.

The effect of constantly changing urban landscape is achieved by the diversity and scale of media – billboards, old signs, advertising columns, elements found in the hall such as the glass skylight, and non-standard form and size of artistic installations. For an incidental viewer, it may even result in visual chaos. However, such excess undoubtedly brings about a certain charm, as well as an atmosphere of vitality and spontaneity.

We present a diverse collection of works, created in various scales and techniques, utilizing the entire space of the hall. The exhibition can be perceived as a combined artwork or as individual pieces. As a result, being in the hall, among different objects and observing the relationships between them, is an interesting and new experience,
says curator, Łukasz Krajewski aka KRIK

One of the most spectacular objects from the Outsiders 22’ is the commuter train car — an object of every writer’s desire. The train, weighing over 24 tons, was transported in a spectacular manner from the train depot to the gallery. Currently, it’s not only up for display, but also serves as an art workshop.

Each year, the process of creating a new layer of the exhibition takes several months. In the last few weeks before the premiere, artists come to Gdańsk to create site-specific objects that fit into the narrative about the clash of urban art with the world of advertising.
